By Melanie P from Mesa, AZ Posted Nov 8, 2010 My husband and I were facing insurmountable challenges involving numerous family deaths, losing income due to the economy, changes in our health, depression and the inability to connect to each other as we once did. In the 3-4 months of counseling on a weekly basis we improved our quality of life, our circumstances and our marriage. How did she do it? She was able to help us hear what the other person was saying...not in their words but in their implications. I have been married for 18 years and everytime I said I didn't like something about the house, our situation or money, my husband interpeted it as I was saying HE was not providing enough, HE was a failure, HE caused my unhappiness. I had no idea he was interpeting my comments as direct hits to his ego. I would have never said those things if I knew that. She was able to help him see how his lack of interaction left me empty. We figured out why we had some of the economic issues we did which seem obvious now but at the time was not so clear. Lisa asked us to do homework each week and we did. We learned to make simple changes that initiated more simple changes which in turn changed the entire situation in time. I think the key was not to let it go until we were completely "done" with our marriage. We hit a rough patch and she helped get us back on the right path that allowed us to communicate better and spend quality time. My overall life is better because of her guidance. However we did work hard at it and when she said go home and sort out the finances by really looking at the whole picture, it took two days of sorting it all out and coming together on how to solve the poor ratio of debt to income. She was able to help open up topics that only caused arguments before. I would highly recommend her if you are willing to do the work. Don't wait too long because then you have a lot of emotional baggage to contend with on top of all the work. Lisa has a great way of helping introverts talk and extroverts to listen. Lisa has a checklist to complete each week that lets her know if it was a bad week or a good week and since both partners have to fill it out we find out while we thought the week was pretty good, the other person didn't feel that way. It helped her and it helped us. We could see our overall progress using these checklists too. She will be on our speed dial for future challenges. I respect her and the way she was able to help us.
